When a storm damages your roof, filing an insurance claim can feel complicated. Knowing the usual steps helps you stay organized and avoid delays. Every policy is different, so always review your own policy and follow the instructions of your insurance company.
1. Protect the Property
If water is coming in, take reasonable steps to limit further damage, such as moving belongings away from the leak and placing containers to catch water. Do not climb onto a damaged roof yourself.
2. Document the Damage
Take photos and videos of the damage outside and inside the home, including ceiling stains, wet insulation and debris on the roof. Write down the date of the storm and keep receipts of any emergency expenses.
3. Contact Your Insurance Company
Report the damage to your insurance company as soon as possible. Ask about the deadline to file, what information they need and how the inspection will be scheduled.
4. Have the Roof Reviewed by a Contractor
A roofing contractor can review the roof, document what they find and explain the repairs it needs. This gives you a clear picture of the damage when you talk with your insurance company.
5. The Insurance Inspection
Your insurance company usually sends an adjuster to inspect the roof. The adjuster reviews the damage and prepares a report based on your policy.
6. The Insurance Company Decides
Coverage, approval and payment are decided by your insurance company, based on your policy and the inspection. Read the decision carefully and ask your insurer about anything that is not clear.
7. Schedule the Repair
Once you know what is approved, you can schedule the repair or replacement and plan the work with your contractor.
