Connecticut weather is hard on roofs. Nor’easters, summer thunderstorms, hail and heavy snow all put stress on shingles, flashing and gutters. Some storm damage is easy to see, but much of it stays hidden until water finds its way inside. Knowing the warning signs helps you act before a small problem turns into a larger repair.

Check From the Ground First

After a storm, walk around your property and look at the roof from the ground. Do not climb onto the roof yourself. Wet or damaged shingles are slippery, and a damaged roof deck may not hold your weight.

  • Missing shingles or sections where the roof looks uneven
  • Shingles that are lifted, curled or bent back by the wind
  • Branches or debris resting on the roof
  • Bent, loose or detached gutters and downspouts
  • Dents on gutters, vents or metal flashing, a common sign of hail

Check Your Gutters and Downspouts

Asphalt shingles are covered with granules that protect them from the sun and the weather. After a hailstorm or strong wind, you may find these granules collected in your gutters or at the bottom of your downspouts. A large amount of granules can mean the shingles took a hard hit.

Check Inside the Home

Some roof damage shows up indoors before you can see it outside. Look at the ceilings on the top floor and, if you can do it safely, inside the attic.

  • Water stains or discoloration on ceilings and walls
  • Damp insulation or wet spots in the attic
  • Daylight coming through the roof boards
  • Peeling paint near the roofline

Document What You Find

Take clear photos of any damage you see, inside and outside, and write down the date of the storm. If you plan to file an insurance claim, these records help you explain what happened. If water is coming in, protect your belongings and move them away from the leak.

Have the Roof Reviewed

A roofing contractor can review the damage up close and explain whether your roof needs a repair or a replacement. Edgar Maza Construction LLC reviews storm-damaged roofs, explains the repairs your roof needs and assists with the insurance claim process. Your insurance company decides coverage and approval.
